Thermography or thermal imaging is a non-invasive test that can indicate early stage breast disease. Thermography offers earlier detection of breast disease than has been possible through breast self examination, doctor examination or mammography alone. It detects subtle physiologic changes that accompany breast pathology due to cancer, fibrocystic disease or an infection. Thermography can be used by doctors to enhance diagnosis and monitor treatment.
All women can benefit from thermography. However, it is very useful in women aged 30-50 because they have denser breast tissue which decreases the effectiveness of mammography.
Tumor growth occurs over years so early detection of abnormalities would allow for optimal treatment and intervention. Thermography is useful in early detection and monitoring of abnormal physiology.
Thermography is a quick and easy procedure. It is non-invasive, free of radiation, painless, without body contact and F.D.A. registered. Current recommendations are to use thermography for annual screening of women of all ages along with mammography in women aged 50 and older. Women should also have a regular breast exam by a health professional and should perform monthly breast self exams. Women should also be aware of any changes in the breast and discuss these changes with a physician immediately.
